Walk into most California family law courtrooms, or into the office of many California family law lawyers, and you will be introduced to a software program called Dissomaster. This very expensive computer software, $500 plus per year, is what the lawyers and judges use to calculate mandatory child support in California. Other products include XSpouse and SupportTax. They are complicated, powerful software programs performing involved calculations.
What if you cannot afford that kind of money, but you still need to do the math? There are a couple of options. For one you can go down to your nearest family law courthouse where there should be a computer available for public use that has the software on it. For two, you can go online and run a stripped-down version of the software that the California Department of Child Support Services offers. It is stripped-down in the sense that it does not allow as many tax modeling options as the commercial products, but it is pretty darn impressive. It is FREE to use. And it is available on-line so that you don’t have to go to the courthouse. And it is FREE!
